Hypertension
Hypertension (high blood pressure), typically defined as blood pressure greater than 130/90 mmHg, is a major cardiovascular disease risk factor. Each increment of 20 mmHg in systolic or 10 mmHg in diastolic doubles cardiovascular disease risk across the entire BP range from 115/75 to 185/115 mmHg. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to lower blood pressure through increased intake of potassium, magnesium, and fiber from vegetables, fruits, and legumes; the anti-inflammatory effects of extra-virgin-olive-oil polyphenols; and the anti-thrombotic environment promoted by alpha-linolenic-acid and omega-3 fatty acids from fish.
