Secondary Cardiovascular Prevention

Secondary cardiovascular prevention refers to the medical and lifestyle interventions implemented after a patient has experienced an initial cardiovascular event (such as a myocardial infarction or stroke) to prevent recurrence. Key components include aggressive lipid management, blood pressure control, and nutritional strategies like the mediterranean-diet.

Beyond pharmacological management, intensive lifestyle-modification (as seen in the ornish-lifestyle-heart-trial) has also been shown to facilitate plaque-regression.

The cordioprev-trial provided additional evidence that a Mediterranean-style diet can reduce the risk of recurrent MACE compared to low-fat alternatives.

Modern guidelines, such as the 2026-acc-aha-dyslipidemia-guidelines, emphasize aggressive dyslipidemia-management and risk-stratification to reduce atherosclerotic-cardiovascular-disease.
